This practice started in 2009 as evening and weekend work while I was at firms in Muskoka. It grew because clients kept asking for the one thing larger firms are structured not to provide: direct access to the person who actually understands their file.
At most firms, the person who knows your situation and the person you talk to aren’t the same person. Work gets delegated down, questions route through layers, and the planning that should happen in year three gets deferred until it’s a problem in year seven. That model works for large corporate clients. It serves an incorporated professional poorly, because their situation changes every year and the decisions compound.
Occhiuto CPA Professional Corporation is built the other way around. You work with me directly ,every conversation, every return, every planning decision.
Background
I completed my undergraduate business degree at York University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2004. Over twenty years in public accounting since, including three years at BDO Canada, one of the world’s largest accounting networks, working from their Muskoka offices in Huntsville, Bracebridge and Orillia.
During that period I completed CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Program, the profession’s three-year specialist tax curriculum. It’s uncommon in firms this size, and it’s why the technical problems professional corporations run into are familiar here rather than novel: passive investment income eroding the small business deduction, TOSI limits on income splitting, holding company structures, corporate-owned insurance, estate freezes.
I’m a Chartered Professional Accountant and Chartered Accountant registered with CPA Ontario, and I’m currently completing an MBA in Financial Management at Carleton University. The firm operates from Woodbridge in Vaughan.
